I always go to the CNA … They are the ones that know the resident … They may not know the scientific names but they know what is going on … They see every day from top to bottom.īy paying close attention to a resident’s repetitive behavior while restrained in a wheelchair, a CNA recognized the unspoken desire of the resident to be free from the chair restraint. For instance a Nurse Supervisor (RN) described her reliance on nursing assistants (CNAs) to pay attention to the details of a resident’s condition: ~ It was essential to “knowing the resident” and enabled staff to register subtle resident signals before these could become serious issues. Paying attention in direct care: Several direct care staff said that “paying attention” allowed them to identify and address resident care issues integral to good resident care. The staff described paying attention as needed both in providing direct care and managing staff In this article, we describe paying attention as used by administrators, supervisors, charge nurses, and CNAs with the aim to challenge nursing home leaders to: 1) hone their awareness for paying attention 2) understand the impact that paying attention has on residents and staff, and 3) encourage an environment where all staff members pay better attention.ĭuring the case studies, we observed what staff members termed “paying attention” (and not paying attention), across all levels of staff and departments. In a study of nursing homes, we found that paying attention is critical in providing good resident care and facilitating effective peer and supervisory relationships. Not paying attention, or non-vigilance, has been associated with concerns over patient safety, particularly medication errors and infection control ( Burke, 2003). Because early warning signs of change or danger (whether it is something as simple as recognizing that a resident is chilled and needs a sweater, or as complex as impending stroke), are by definition unexpected, staying “tuned in” and expecting the unexpected is key to fostering resilient and reliable organizational environments ( Coutu 2003). When all staff are paying attention to early or weak signs of potential resident care or staff management issues, information relevant to decision-making can be shared and used before such issues escalate into larger problems. Similar to vigilance, it encompasses staying alert and on guard for the unexpected or unpredictable in order to take necessary and quick action. Using all of our sensory and cognitive resources, paying attention occurs by listening, noticing details, and taking actions that change the course of events. Paying attention to others, our surroundings, and ourselves is a powerful component of “mindful practice” ( Epstein 2003a) and requires an internal discipline that means that nothing is accepted as routine. Namely, when we act on behalf of the attention we might receive, we sacrifice the attention we’d otherwise pay towards the thing we are creating. The difference between highly effective organizations and others “is the sensitivity or mindfulness with which people react to even very weak signs that some kind of change or danger is approaching” ( Coutu 2003, p.86). In the TED Talk How Craving Attention Makes You Less Creative, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt explains how the motives for attention have a way of limiting creative abilities. However, the nature of creativity is sometimes confused with the attention it gets. No matter how you apply your creative talents, it’s just a way for questioning what is-or what isn’t-and finding new ways to express the answer.Ĭreativity is most simply a way of looking at the natural order of things through the lens of discovery. We are all artists simply choosing different mediums that fit unique needs for letting creativity flow into something visible, audible, flavorful, tangible, functional, soulful, and so on. Some use creativity to build, others to create, or communicate, define, imagine, solve, share, and so on. After all, being creative is a part of the human condition.Ĭreativity means many things to many people but mainly it’s the exploration of interest through expression. It may not be public knowledge or even feel mentionable at all, but the fact is, there’s something creative about each and every one of us. We pay it time and attention to cultivate and practice into a skill that brings personal fulfillment. Most of us have some talent or knack that’s uniquely us and definitively original.

This fresh view of the qualities of our ancestor’s world brought about a rapid change in human appreciation of landscape. There had always been high regard for the pleasurable and safe qualities of well-tended agricultural home-places, and a genuine fear of wilderness, waste and mountains but both the Picturesque and the Romantic movements opened the eyes of those who had the time and money to seek out the uniqueness of each place, whether home or wild. We are still heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the Picturesque and Romantic Movements, but have failed to understand that these ways of interpreting our habitat was as much about the commonplace as about the finest and grandest. We are obsessed with drawing boundaries around areas and designating them as being special, for example The Lake District National Park, or Yellowstone National Park. We then neglect the rest and the consequence is that we are skewing aesthetics and losing sight of beauty in the commonplace. In that age when the art of conversation and the written word was arguably at its finest, critics of views would judge a piece of countryside by the quality of these composed views and use words such as picturesque, sublime, ugly, grotesque, beautiful. Some felt that man should use artifice to enhance these views, while others preferred the natural composition. A central tenet of the Picturesque, and subsequent Romantic Movement, was that landscape was something alive, to experience with all the senses. In those times the extremes of the seasons, as well as danger, disease, poverty, thirst and starvation, and the sounds, sights and smells these generated, were much closer to home and even the wealthy suffered from exposure to raw nature – even in front of their own well-fed hearths. ‘Landskipe’, a word found in Scots and 17th century English, was derived from Middle English (Anglo Saxon) ‘landschippe’, meaning a region or district. I understand that a similar word comes from Dutch. But our modern word ‘Landscape’ was adopted only a few generations ago among those of our cultivated ancestors who had time and opportunity to appreciate high art and to study the ‘rustic’ view as if it were a carefully composed classical painting, or series of paintings. And Steube expects if he gets the bill through it will trigger a groundswell of interest among other states and a nationwide examination of the annual flip ahead and fall back in time – a tradition that’s been referred to as humanity’s dumbest ritual.Ĭompanies complain the jumping ahead or falling back on the clock creates scheduling, staffing, and other logistical problems. “However, if Congress allows when we spring forward in March we will stay there.”įlorida would have to petition Congress for permission to make DST permanent Florida time. “The time zones will remain the same,” explained Steube when he amended the bill to keep the state divided between CST and EST. He told the committee he understood Panhandle residents had no objections to a permanent DST. To get his bill past Gainer and Montford, the chair of the Commerce Committee, Steube revised the proposal. Montford represents folks in both time zones and grew up on Central Time in Blountstown. Bill Montford, D-Tallahassee, about voters in the western counties. “Why are you picking on the Panhandle? Why do we have to move? That’s what they asked me,” said Sen. At which point, it follows the county line south to the Gulf. The dividing line then follows the ICW turning around and heading northwest and then due north to the Gulf County line. The boundary follows the river downstream to just north of the city of Apalachicola where the river merges with the Intracoastal Waterway. Right now, the Apalachicola River divides Florida into the Eastern and Central time zones. He also wanted to move the entire state into one time zone. That would put an end to the twice-annual routine of moving the clock an hour ahead or back as the nation flips between Daylight Saving Time to standard time every November and March. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, proposed to make Florida time Daylight Saving Time all the time. We do not like Tallahassee telling us what time it is.” “All these years we’ve set our schedule to our time. George Gainer, R-Panama City, during a committee hearing Monday. “I tell you, honestly, if we were to (vote to) change I don’t know if I could go home,” said Sen. The refusal of Panhandle residents from Blountstown to Pensacola to sync their clocks with Tallahassee and Miami threatened to derail the Sunshine Protection Act of 2018. It wants nothing to do with Eastern Standard Time. Watch Video: Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday The downside? Hotels raise their room rates and airfare is likely to be higher, too.Īfter busy peak season ends, you're likely to find less crowds, but temperatures start to drop fast. What's more, Midsummer, one of the country's biggest cultural celebrations, takes place during this time. Sunlight also lasts the longest during summer, with sunrise occurring as early as 3:40 a.m. Instead of highs ranging from the 50s to 30s, visitors will be greeted with comfortable 60- and 70-degree temps during the day. The summer boasts the most comfortable temperatures throughout the year. Summer is Stockholm's peak season, and it's easy to see why. May is the warmest of the spring months, reaching 60 degrees, but nighttime is still pretty chilly with lows hanging in the 40s. March averages drift between the mid-20s and 30s, and during April highs get up to about 48 degrees. But don't expect a whole lot of warmth during spring. After the icy-cold, freezing days of January and February pass, the people of Oulu head for the ski tracks, skating rinks or the sea ice to skate or do some ice fishing.Airfare and room rates are slightly more expensive than the winter, but springtime in Stockholm is still cheaper than the summer. The dark period lasts until Christmas, but, as the new year begins, people begin to notice the light increasing once again. Soon the shores will freeze and darkness will swallow the light until the first snow arrives to brighten the land and to mark the beginning of winter. Only the fishermen, who catch salmon and whitefish in the centre of the city, still keep their boats in the water. At the beginning of the month, boats are lifted onto the shore. At the end of September, darkness once again gradually starts to overpower light. Vegetable and berry crops are gathered, and people venture into the nearby woodland to pick mushrooms and wild berries.Īs autumn advances and the starlings head south, the northern nature bursts into its beautiful fall colours. The days start getting shorter and people are already longing for the bright summer nights. These sought-after berries are then stored in order to allow the memories of summer and sunshine to be rekindled again and again throughout the dark, cold winter.Īround the middle of August, the people of Oulu return home and the schools reopen. In July nature sets a dazzling scene for the enthusiasts who go in search of the golden cloudberries in marshes. As summer arrives, the face of Oulu assumes a fresh, green expression: the leaves on the trees are out and the grass starts to grow. Rotuaari, the pedestrian street in the centre of the city, is full of summer events and city folk, as well as people from other places, visit the open market at the harbour. At night, it simply doesn't get dark what's more, at midsummer the sun barely grazes the horizon. The people of Oulu, who have gone through the winter heavily dressed, unwind, and light, colourful summer clothes emerge and illuminate the city streets. Schools close their doors at the end of May and the summer holiday period starts, during which it is said that Finland is 'closed'. Finally, when the swallows arrive in Oulu, summer begins. A Finnish proverb suggests that when the lark arrives in Finland from the shores of the Mediterranean, summer is only a month away. The boat harbour smells of paint and tar as boats are readied for the short but lively summer. Many city inhabitants spend their weekends repairing their summer cottages in the surrounding countryside or right in the heart of the city, in the allotment areas. Birdwatchers, binoculars in hand, flock to the shores and fields. The arrival of geese in April is a sign of spring's awakening. In March, there is as much light as there is darkness, but the light is already beginning to take over. The people of Oulu have plenty of light and darkness, but in varying quantities during the different seasons of the year. It's super cool to have characters that live in the real world and were able to experience EPCOT at one point, and I can't wait to see if that means anything longer term. But Peter Quill visited here in 1987, and he definitely inspired Xandarians to come here, and leave a few of those Easter eggs along the way. Some of the really fun things that we've sprinkled throughout, which- I can't spoil them, because when you stumble upon them, it's so worth it. Can you talk about, including some of those nods to past things and integrating them in here? I never thought I would hear Star-Lord say, “veggie, veggie, fruit, fruit.” SPENCER LYNN: From the beginning, we knew this was going to be an EPCOT story, and had to be an EPCOT narrative that makes sense in this park. There were things here that came before this. I know one of the big things about this new other-world showcase pavilion is that it's a lot of history. KASSANDRA ROSE: My favorite moment is actually before you come in, when you see the Star Blaster in all its glory, so that is really exciting for the guests. Do you have a favorite moment throughout the coaster, or even the queue? SPENCER LYNN: My favorite moment is here in the Wonders of Xandar pavilion, when there is some amazing magic that happens, and we teleport you straight from EPCOT up to a Nova ship orbiting above Earth. I had never been on a coaster like this before. When I rode it for the first time, I was really shocked at how amazing and new this is for Walt Disney World. KASSANDRA ROSE: If I had to put it in one word, I think it would have to be thrilling. But if I had to put in one word, which is always the next question, fun. With that omnicoaster technology, we're actually pointing you to all the story elements that we want you to see and ensuring that you don't miss anything the whole way through. Can you try and describe it? For someone who hasn't experienced the attraction, what would you say about it? SPENCER LYNN: It is a family-thrill coaster that features Disney's first-ever reverse launch, so it's very unique in how you move through this phase. This is an attraction like I've never been on before, and I've honestly been trying to describe it. This belongs to this.’ But we also wanted to create an environment, that, even if you've never seen the film, you kind of know and understand going through the queue that this story is specific to EPCOT. We do want you to understand, like I said, subconsciously, ‘oh yes, that belongs to that. KASSANDRA ROSE: All of those little nods that you see, we have thoroughly planned out and worked with all of our partners. Can you talk about like, matching that? When we see the ship, we know that's associated with Star-Lord. All of the Guardians we know and love have very specific color schemes, which I can see represented throughout the attraction. Everything you see with the finishes, the way they react in the light with projection, the other teams, that really comes together and is integrated through that process. So, going back to the authentic story, the Guardian story, and then trying to figure out how do we subconsciously tell that story to guests? As an artist, and focusing on paint and color, I don't get to use words or sounds. KASSANDRA ROSE: My starting point is always the story. That's what led us to where we are today. We take the amazing story of the Guardians of the Galaxy that everyone's grown to love, and then we combine it with the amazing technology that we know how to do, which is, in this case, the Omnicoaster, and a lot of other things throughout the pavilion as a whole. When you take on a project like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, where do you start? How do you take the idea and actually create what we see now? SPENCER LYNN: Everything starts with the story. Any UV blacklight paint that you see inside the ride. We work on the Starblaster, we're working inside all of the scenic treatments that you see, even the ride vehicles. KASSANDRA ROSE: As a color designer and artisan, we are in charge of all of the color and finishes that you see, exterior and interior. And I think in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, we've done that. My first question is simple: can you explain your roles? SPENCER LYNN: As producer, we're tasked with making sure we get across the finish line and deliver on what we said we were going to deliver. And when we say as a team, we really mean that. From there, you and your partner have to navigate through the now larger-than-life house and surrounding property as a team. After their daughter consults The Book of Love and sheds tears, Cody and May wake to find they are turned into dolls. Developed by Hazelight Studios, It Takes Two is only playable in co-op mode, either online or on the couch. Though It Takes Two's storyline may be a bit strange to experience with your partner-it follows a couple on the verge of divorce-it's best example of truly cooperative gameplay on this list. Finally, you can download Stardew Valley on practically any platform and start playing right away, but physical editions are also available, which might be a nice gift to wrap up and surprise them with on Valentine's Day.īuy it digitally: Nintendo Eshop | PlayStation Store | Xbox Live | Steam | Google Play | Apple App Store The recent 1.5 update also added local split-screen co-op, so you can share the TV while you play. Stardew Valley is fantastic as a single-player title, but it also has an excellent multiplayer mode so you can play local or online co-op with your sweetheart. Just as you may be doing this Valentine's Day, the game makes you consider what gifts your partner will respond best to, and even after you marry the character of your choice, you still have to cherish them and show them attention if you want to keep them, which is a pretty solid message about relationships. While you might think Stardew Valley is just a farming sim, this massively popular game is also about building friendships and pursuing romance with the NPC of your choice. Launched in 2015, this country-life RPG holds a lot of the same appeal as Nintendo's social sim franchise while offering a lot more depth in terms of relationships and activities. If your partner was obsessed with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, let me introduce another game they're sure to love: Stardew Valley. New and decidedly immersive mechanics, Monster Hunt represents one of the most important traditions of the heroes of Norsca. The style of this faction is therefore very aggressive: the economy is strongly oriented towards raids and raids, having little evolved infrastructures, and the armies often include huge monstrous units. The extremely harsh climate of the region and the chaotic influence caused mutations in both humans and creatures that managed to survive in this place, giving birth to some of the most feared monsters of the Old World. Composed of tribes of followers of the Chaos gods often at war with each other, the Norsemen armies frequently make raids along the coast of the Sea of Claws and into the Kislevite regions. Norsca is a Norsman faction originating from the peninsula of the same name north of the Empire. We chase the nightmares that haunt your cowardly dreams. Personally I'm going for Kihar the Tormentor in my current campaign.“Let's hunt down the monsters you fear the most. The Ice-Forged Legion is also an incredible piece of artillery, but I don't really like using it as Norsca, as it feels more flavourful to ditch cowardly ranged stuff and just rush into glorious mass melee brawls. Both embedded in an army (he gets a dragon mount and fire/shadow/metal spells), and as a campaign map agent with 95% success chance on all actions. However, he starts at level 30 and you can't pick skill points for him (iirc, could be they changed it) so you'll miss out on a lot of important blue line skills.īut the hero option of the Serpent, Kihar the Tormentor, is an absolute beast. This is of course only silly flavour considerations, from a pure gameplay perspective he's a really strong lord. Feels like he could stab you in the back at any moment, the avian bastard. But I don't like having a greater demon of Tzeentch around, I like Wulfrik to be the undisputed tool of the gods in the world. Iirc, it just adds +100 chaos corruption to random provinces.Īzrik the Maze Keeper is a pretty good lord iirc. The Crow/Nurgle plague is pretty lackluster. Then Hound/Khorne or Serpent/Slaanesh are probably the best tier 3s. I think the best is to get all 4 gods to tier 2 first. Think we missed one? However, in their final 32 games, the Jazz started to come together and finished strong posting a 17-15 record, as they finished in last place with an NBA worse 23-59 record.ġ975/76: In their second season, the Jazz would move into the spacious Superdome. The Jazz would continue to struggle throughout the season as they went through three coaches while winning just six of their first 50 games. The Jazz would not get their first win until November 10th when they beat the Portland Trail Blazers by one point at home. A week later, after four road losses, the Jazz lost their first home game to Philadelphia 76ers. However, the Jazz got off to a rocky start as they scored just 74 points while losing their first game on the road to the New York Knicks on October 17th. Pete Maravich shot the ball from anywhere and everywhere. He wore a signature pair of floppy good-luck sweat socks that always appeared to need washing. Maravich, a star in college at Louisiana State, was a showman. Their NBA team, known as the Jazz hoped to hit a sweet note with fans by acquiring Pistol Pete Maravich from the Atlanta Hawks.
